Record daily high temperatures in Oregon are suspected in four deaths reported in the Portland ar as much of the country continues to swelter under an early heat wave. California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Washington and Idaho are all under an excessive heat warning, the National Weather Service’s highest alert, while parts of the East Coast as well as Alabama and Mississippi are under heat advisories. The death of a motorcyclist Saturday in California’s Death Valley also has been blamed on the severe heat.

The Republican National Committee’s platform committee has adopted a policy document that reflects former President Donald Trump’s position. The platform opposes a federal abortion ban and ceding limits to states, omitting a national ban for the first time in 40 years. That's according to two people briefed on the matter. The new platform language relies on the Constitution's 14th Amendment to say that states are “free to pass laws” concerning abortion. Trump has long argued the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade should leave states free to pass bans on their own without a federal abortion restriction.

The future Republican vice presidential candidate’s plane is currently parked in an undisclosed hangar — an empty spot on its fuselage for where a decal featuring his or her name will soon be placed. Fundraisers have been planned. All that’s left: an announcement from former President Donald Trump unveiling his pick. Senior aides and longtime allies insist they still don’t know who the presumptive GOP nominee will choose to join him on the ticket — with many believing the choice is still in flux.

President Joe Biden has urged his supporters to stay unified during a series of Sunday stops in critical Pennsylvania. His calls came Sunday, even as some leading congressional Democrats privately suggested  it was time for him to abandon his reelection bid amid intensifying questions about whether he’s fit for another term. “I, honest to God, have never been more optimistic about America’s future if we stick together,”  he said. As Congress prepares to resume this week, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries convened top committee lawmakers Sunday afternoon to assess their views. Several Democratic committee leaders said Biden should step aside.

Texas officials are telling coastal residents to expect power outages and floodings as Beryl was forecast to potentially regain hurricane strength before making landfall. Landfall was expected early Monday. The outer bands of Beryl began lashing communities along the Texas shoreline on Sunday, bringing rain and intensifying winds. The storm was projected to make landfall in an area near Matagorda Bay, about 100 miles south of Houston, but officials warned that the path could still change. The chief of the Texas Division of Emergency Management says residents along the coast should expect power outages as Beryl comes ashore. Several counties have issued voluntary evacuation orders.

A visitor to Death Valley National Park died Sunday from heat exposure and another person was hospitalized as the temperature reached 128 degrees. Officials say the two visitors were part of a group of six motorcyclists riding through the Badwater Basin area amid scorching weather. The person who died was not identified. The park said in a statement that other motorcyclist was transported to a hospital in Las Vegas for “severe heat illness.” A long-running heat wave has shattered previous records across the U.S. and baked parts of the West with dangerous temperatures. An excessive heat warning — the National Weather Service’s highest alert — was in effect for about 36 million people.
