As a student, it’s important that you fill out the proper documents every year to make sure you continue to qualify for federal aid and scholarships. 

Other factors also impact your year-to-year eligibility for financial aid, including a change in your financial circumstance and meeting the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.

Scholarships

As a returning undergraduate, you will continue to receive any New York University scholarships awarded to you during your first year, subject to availability of funds.

However, you must maintain certain criteria, which include:

  • Remaining a full-time student taking at least 12 credits. If you are enrolled less than full-time, but taking between 6 and 11 credits, your scholarship will be prorated.

Please note: Students in opportunity programs or special scholar groups may be required to file the FAFSA in order to renew their scholarship each year.

Federal and New York State Financial Aid

As a student, you must resubmit the FAFSA each year to continue to qualify for federal financial aid. Students who are also New York State residents also need to fill out the TAP application after submitting the FAFSA to be considered for New York State financial aid.

The implementation of the FAFSA Simplification Act has resulted in delays for the rollout of the 2024-25 FAFSA.  While the application is now available for students to submit, schools will not be able to receive student data until late March.

To ensure your financial aid package will be ready in advance of your bill for the semester, you should file the FAFSA by May 1.

Changes in Circumstances

If your family has experienced a financial change in circumstances, you may be eligible for additional financial aid.

The Scholarship Appeal for Returning Undergraduates is available for all eligible undergraduate students. You can request a scholarship review through your NYU Albert account. 

To review your request, NYU recommends that you have your financial aid application on file for the semester in which you are appealing. This includes the FAFSA for U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and eligible non-citizens, and the CSS Profile for international and undocumented students. 

We cannot guarantee appeal scholarships.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

To remain eligible for federal financial aid at NYU, you will have to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) according to the guidelines laid out by the university. 

The Office of Financial Aid typically conducts an SAP review at the conclusion of each academic year and includes courses completed through the summer term. 

If you do not meet the requirements, you’ll receive a notice in your NYU Albert account. Your federal financial aid will be suspended. In most cases, state and NYU financial aid in the form of scholarships require the same criteria be met. You will automatically be placed on financial aid suspension, unless you are approved for financial aid probation. 

The SAP calculator (.xls file) will help you to determine how many credits you need to pass to meet SAP status again, should you end up on probation or suspension. 

Requirements for traditional undergraduate students include:

  • Earning a passing grade in a minimum of 67 percent of the courses in which they're enrolled
  • Maintaining a GPA of 2.0

Students participating in the New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), the New York State Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), or the SPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies must:

  • Earn a passing grade in 67 percent of the courses in which they're enrolled
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0
