Access Your Online Portal

Once students are notified about approval to enroll they are directed to log into their individualized Enrollment Portal by clicking on the spring semester link. The portal will be customized based on information that we have about the student, including their citizenship, and destination. Students should begin completing the pending items on their checklist as soon as possible, and review the checklist any time they are unsure of any upcoming deadlines or action items.

Confirm Your Spot

All students are recommended to confirm their intention to enroll on their Enrollment Portal as soon as possible after receiving notification of acceptance. Please understand that enrollment capacity is limited and if the program reaches capacity before we receive a student's confirmation, the student will be placed on a wait list. More information on confirming your spot can be found in the student's notification email.

Visiting Students Only

All non-NYU students must first activate their NYU NetID and then set up their NYU Email. Please reference the instructions on activating your NetID.

Attend Welcome Event

Your notification email will detail the date, time and location of the study away welcome event which is an opportunity for students to meet advisors and other enrolled students, ask questions about the study away process, and learn about the variety of study away resources available to them.

Attend Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation

All students in New York must attend a Pre-Departure Orientation. The date(s), time, and location for the orientation are detailed in communications shared with your student and in their enrollment portal. Students outside of New York can also find details on their required pre-departure orientation in their enrollment portal.

Continue Checking the Enrollment Portal

Students should continue completing required tasks on their Enrollment Portal checklist from now up until (and after) arrrival in their study away location.

Book Your Flight

NYU does not arrange group flights or book travel for students studying away. Students are encouraged to book through NYU's preferred travel partner, Egencia. Arrival and departure dates for study away locations can be found on this calendar page.

Register for GeoBlue Health Insurance

All students studying with NYU Global Programs based outside of the U.S. are enrolled at no cost in international health coverage through GeoBlue.

In addition to GeoBlue, all students are expected to maintain valid domestic health insurance over the course of their semester away. Students usually maintain the domestic insurance coverage that is offered through either their home institution or their parent/guardian’s insurance plan. GeoBlue is valid only for the dates of your study away program.

A month prior to the start the program, students will receive an email from NYU Student Insurance/GeoBlue with instructions about creating your GeoBlue profile so you can print your health insurance card.

Submit Flight Details into NYU Traveler and Enrollment Portal

Once you purchase your flight, input your flight details into both NYU Traveler and the Arrival Itinerary item on your Enrollment Portal  NYU Traveler provides up-to-the-minute info of potential threats to your safety during your travels. It also enables NYU Department of Campus Safety to offer assistance in the event of an emergency.  

Print out Copies of the Geoblue Health Insurance Card

After registering online with Geoblue, students should print copies of their Geoblue health insurance card and take this with them when they depart.

Print out Copies of the Arrival Cheat Sheet

One week before departure, an Arrival Cheat Sheet will be posted on the Enrollment Portal with detailed information on immigration, luggage, customs, and transportation from the airport to the study away academic center or residence on arrival day. Students are encouraged to share this Arrival Cheat Sheet with friends and family back home.

Many travelers choose a combination of two or three travel money options, such as carrying cash, debit or credit cards, or traveler’s checks. Before you decide which one will work best for you, call your bank and ask about transaction fees and currency conversion charges. If your bank’s fees are high, consider getting a new credit or debit card for your trip.

1. Contact your bank to find out if they charge international transaction fees for making purchases or using an ATM abroad.
2. Tell your bank that your student is traveling and will be out of the country for the term, so that when your student uses his or her card abroad the bank will not freeze the account.
3. Make sure to read visa requirements for your student’s study away site to read details about how much money must be in your account in order to get the visa. Students have been provided this information by their Site Representative. 
4. Find out if your student must have bought a return ticket in order to get into the country (for immigration purposes).
5. If you are considering buying traveler’s checks, contact your bank to see if they offer this service. Also, check out this USAToday article for more information.

University-related travel may now be booked or registered through NYU Traveler, which gives you the option to book on-line reservations for air, rail, hotel, or car by using one of the NYU Traveler partner agencies. By using one of these agencies, your travel plans will be automatically connected to Worldcue, a traveler safety service. You can also make your NYU-related travel arrangements through other means and register your travel itinerary with Worldcue.

Sometimes being abroad can make it difficult for a student to stay in touch with their family ─  you have to consider time differences, additional commitments such as academic excursions/personal travel, cost, and potentially unreliable technology that may limit access to communicating. Here are a few tips to help you keep in touch with your student while he or she is abroad.

Develop a communication plan:

Schedule a time to talk weekly or more often as your family deems appropriate.

Consider various technologies:

There might be tools that will work better across time zones and oceans than what you currently use: WhatsApp, Facetime, Google Hangouts, Skype, phone calls/chat.

Use social media to stay connected:

Follow your student's experiences through their posts on Facebook, Instagram, Foursquare, and SnapChat.

At some point while your student is studying away, you may want or need to contact your student's study away site.  Contact information for each of NYU's global sites is available on their respective webpages.  However, please keep in mind that due to several Federal laws, such as FERPA and HIPAA, there may be limited or no information that your student's study away site will be able to share with you pertaining to your student's housing, academics, and health.  We encourage parents to discuss these topics with their students directly and contact the study away site in the instance that a parent needs to report something significant to the study away staff.

If you plan to visit your student while they're studying away, please keep in mind that NYU staff and security personnel are not permitted to confirm your student's whereabouts or whether or not they even live in NYU housing due to the Federal law, FERPA.  With that in mind, please notify your student ahead of time if you plan to visit them and when you have arrived to meet them so they can receive you.  Although you are the student's family member, you will still be required to abide by any pertinent guest policies at your student's study away site.

Although NYU staff at the study away sites hope to not have to contact a student's parents during their semester or academic year away, there may be a few instances in which parental contact is necessary.  These include instances when:

• a student who is under 18 years of age violates NYU's student conduct code.
• a student is incapacitated and has been hospitalized due to illness or injury.
• a student has a serious mental health concern and is deemed a harm to themselves or others in their community.

In most other instances, NYU staff will communicate directly with students and will not be able to share information with a student's parents due to several Federal laws, including FERPA and HIPAA.

NYU's career development centers currently offer a wide variety of programs covering global career resources, ways to market your student’s study abroad experience, ways to become involved in international opportunities once back in New York and many others.
