Emerging Media Programs

New York University is a leader in the field of emerging media. Our students and faculty are exploring and creating new communications technologies and applications that harness emerging media for art, education, entertainment, business, and human well-being. These programs are especially relevant for students with interests in app development; software design; game design, development, or engineering; digital photography and film; music technology; digital arts; interaction design; digital graphics; media studies; human-computer interfaces; or other forms of emerging media.

Business of Entertainment, Media, and Technology (Minor) New York

New York City is home to major sectors of the entertainment and media industries, including media conglomerates, network and cable television, independent film, book, and magazine publishing, marketing and advertising companies, and digital start-ups. This cross-school minor provides a foundation in the business of media and entertainment and how technology impacts these industries.

Digital Communications and Media (BS) New York

The BS in Digital Communications and Media addresses the demand for professionals in the converging and fast-changing media environment. Students acquire the most current knowledge of media concepts and participate in focused, hands-on classes in a chosen area of concentration, including time-based media: video and motion design, or interactive media: web and mobile devices. This program is based in the McGee division and is intended for adult students, not traditional undergraduates.

Interactive Media Arts (BFA, minor) New York

At the program’s core is the conviction that digital expression is an essential skill for all — artists, writers and designers as well as programmers and engineers. Students will learn to think about the relationship between digital tools, physical objects and environments, human interaction and technology’s impact on the world. The practical work involves creating and critiquing everything from networked software and apps to objects with embedded interactions — games, wearable devices, computational clothing, social tools, novel controllers, the whole range of objects and interfaces that have at their core interaction with a user.

This concentration offers students intensive professional training to develop the diverse skill sets required for writing music for today’s film and media industries. Students become adept in virtual, traditional and hybrid orchestration, conforming midi and audio cues, score preparation, music editing, sample library creation, and audio production. They complete the program with professional and diverse portfolios, having benefited from opportunities to record with a variety of ensembles, from hybrid sessions with virtuosic soloists to scoring for string and symphonic orchestras featuring the top studio musicians in New York.

This concentration offers students an intensive exploration of existing and emerging technologies. Coursework provides both technical and artistic training in the creation, performance, and documentation of works.
