HOW MUCH TO PAY

The university will charge the following fees:

  1. Program Fee for JD tuition.
JD academic program fees are by academic year only, and not by term or by course.

  2. Mandatory incidental and ancillary fees for the core programs and services that contribute to student academic and wellness support, and a system access fee for technology services and support.

  3. Optional incidental and ancillary fees for services and programs that contribute to the student experience and student well being and include fees for University-operated student services. Log into your ACORN account for opt-out instructions. For further details, please see the official website on non-academic incidental fees

The final official tuition fee schedules for 2024-2025 are anticipated to be posted on July 15th on the UofT Student Accounts website.

Choice: pay the total upfront or pay by term
Fees will be billed by term for the Fall & Winter academic session. The Fall term spans September to December, the Winter term spans January to April. First year classes begin in August. The Fall term JD program fees include the August classes for first year students.

Students may choose to pay, either:

  • the total fees upfront for both terms (Fall & Winter session), or
  • the fees by term (Fall term, Winter term)

Fees Invoice
Similar to how charges are listed on a credit card statement, the fees invoice summarizes university charges and your payments. The minimum amount required to pay to be officially registered is displayed in the invoice. The total amount due for the entire Fall & Winter session (both terms) is also displayed.

Minimum Payment To Be Officially Registered
A Minimum Payment of fees is required in order to be officially registered. A deferral (delay) of this Minimum Payment may be permitted for eligible students who are receiving external student aid (e.g. government student aid), see the section on Fee Deferrals below.

  • New students
In order to be registered at least 100% of the total program fees for your starting academic term (Fall or Winter) is required. The Minimum Payment displayed already credits any tuition deposit(s) made for accepting the offer of admission, i.e. acceptance deposit(s). When paying the Minimum, do not subtract the tuition acceptance deposit values as it is already factored in, instead pay the displayed Minimum.

  • Returning students
In order to be registered at least any outstanding arrears, plus 100% of the program fees for your starting academic term (Fall or Winter) are required.

View the Minimum Payment to Register on the Fees Invoice in ACORN.

  1. Log in to ACORN
  2. In the menu, select FINANCIAL ACCOUNT
  3. In the main body, select the SHOW INVOICE button
  4. Make a record immediately of the minimum payment amount due, since that amount will no longer display after a payment (of any value) is made.

JD Combined Programs
For certain JD combined programs two fee assessments will be displayed: one for the combined JD program, followed by one for the graduate program (e.g. the JD/MA English program, followed by the MA English program). If two assessments are displayed, then the minimum payment to be officially registered is the amount listed for the combined JD program.Back to Top

WHEN TO PAY

updated: May 23, 2023

Deadline

Regardless of method of payment, allow sufficient time – at least five business days - for the payment to reach the university.

Late Payment/No Payment/Service Charges

If you do not meet the deadline to pay (or defer) fees you will not be officially registered, consequently:

  • New students
Your seat at the Faculty of Law may be forfeited.

  • Returning students
Access to CourseMatch (the law school course enrolment system) will be suspended, therefore you will not be able to add courses or claim a wait-listed course. Your line of credits funds will not be accessible, as your registration can not be confirmed to any financial institution.

  • All students
Late payment may result in fee penalties such as service charges and interest charges on outstanding balances.  More information about service charges can be found on the Student Accounts website www.fees.utoronto.ca

For the official fees penalties, please select from the main bar at the top of the page, Payment Deadlines & Penalties, then select Restrictions on Past Due Accounts, then select the appropriate penalty.

Before paying Fall 2024 fees, please read the SUMMARY of the payment process, fee deferrals and incorporating aid funding.

Payment Methods

    1. Visit the UofT Student Accounts website.

        • OSAP students: new payment and refund procedures
Effective 2018 Fall, the payment and refunding processes for full-time OSAP students have changed. View the section More Information About Paying With OSAP Funding at the Student Accounts website.

    2. From the main menu bar at the top of the page, select Making Payments.

    3. In the interim, for paying fees from:
      • Inside Canada
        • Pay through a Canadian financial institution (e.g. your bank, credit union etc.) in-person at the bank, by online or telephone banking if offered by your bank.
        • Payment by credit card (Mastercard, VISA) is permitted via ACORN, and will incur a convenience fee of 2.50% of the amount being paid.
        • Payment may be made using Higher Ed loyalty points (AirMiles or TD Travel Rewards Program), up to $250 in value.

      • Outside of Canada
In collaboration with your local bank:
        • pay online through Convera (formerly Western Union GlobalPay for Students), or
        • pay online through Flywire

      • Using your Scotiabank or TD line of credit for the Minimum Tuition Payment
Regardless of your participation in the UofT JD Financial Aid Program, you may be eligible to obtain a Line of Credit loan from our preferred lenders Scotiabank and TD Bank at their special interest rate for our law students.

        • You might not have access to these Scotiabank or TD funds until after you are officially registered (in mid-late August for all new students, and in early September for continuing upper year students). However, you can still have your tuition fees paid from your line of credit in order to meet the deadline for the Minimum Tuition Payment.

        • To do so, you will have to provide Scotiabank or TD with a copy of your fees invoice from ACORN and ask the bank to deposit the required amount directly to your UofT student fees account . This can be done as soon as you have access to your invoice and fee amount in ACORN.

DEFERRAL (DELAY) OF MINIMUM PAYMENT TO BE OFFICIALLY REGISTERED

A fee deferral is a special financial arrangement available to a qualified student who cannot make the deadline for the Minimum Payment to be officially registered.

  • This arrangement is temporary and you are expected to pay your tuition as soon as you can.
  • Deferrals are not automatically considered, students must submit a formal application to defer.
  • Payment for accommodation in UofT residences cannot be deferred.
  • Eligible students who receive a deferral of the Minimum Payment, become officially registered once the deferrals have been approved

Who is eligible?

Consideration is given to students whose only option for making the minimum payment is the arrival of external funding, such as:

  • Ontario
    OSAP recipients

  • Rest of Canada
    recipients of provincial/territorial government loans

  • U.S.A.
recipients of US Direct Loans (e.g. FAFSA)

  • Scholarship Recipients
with an award value greater than or equal to the minimum payment amount to register. The award must be a UofT award or an external award that is being paid directly to UofT. External awards paid to the student are not eligible.

  • Sponsorship by a Third Party
if your fees will be paid by an organization that requires an invoice from the University, e.g. Aboriginal band.

  • UofT Staff / Staff Dependents

Who is not eligible?

  • JD Combined Programs
Upper-year JD/MBA students are not eligible to apply for a tuition fee deferral. Please contact Rotman if you have any questions about tuition fee payments.
