Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, said he was “concerned” about the prospect of a far-right victory in the upcoming French elections, in his first comments on the vote since it was called earlier this month.

Mr Scholz said he hoped parties other than Marine Le Pen’s were successful in the election at the end of this month, as he also lamented the rise of the right in Germany. “I am concerned about the elections in France,” Mr Scholz told ARD, a public broadcaster in Germany.
