The Metropolitan Police said they would investigate a “small number” of bets made on the timing of the UK general election, raising the stakes in a scandal that has dogged prime minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives in the run-up to next week’s vote.

The “majority of cases” being probed are suspected breaches of provisions of the UK’s Gambling Act which outlaw cheating, the Met said in a statement published on its website yesterday.
