Ireland goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran has a cache of bittersweet moments from last month’s Hockey World Cup. The sweet? Walking out of the tunnel in a sold-out Wagener Stadium for Ireland’s opener against the Netherlands on Saturday, July 2, and having her girlfriend of nearly three years, Anne Veenendaal, on the opposite team.

McFerran and Veenendaal live together in Utrecht. They play with different Dutch clubs. Hockey brought them together, and here they were, about to take part in a World Cup game against each other.
