Irish trio claim gold medals at U-23 European swimming Championships

Mona McSharry and Daniel Wiffen sealed European U-23 Championship gold while Ellen Walshe claimed two silver medals at the National Aquatic Centre.

Sligo woman McSharry won the 50m breaststroke in a time of 30.37 and with a gap of 0.22 ahead of Italy’s Anita Bottazzo.

Wiffen followed this up by cruising to gold in the 1,500m freestyle in 14.35.79.

Walshe then came second in the 100m butterfly in a time of 58.70.

The Dubliner mounted the podium again following the 200m individual medley coming home 0.14 behind American winner Justina Kozan.
