Liverpool’s new manager Arne Slot has recognised the scale of his task replacing Jurgen Klopp by acknowledging his predecessor’s rivalry with Pep Guardiola shaped a new era in football history.

Speaking for the first time since his Anfield appointment, Slot says he was lured to the Premier League because of his long-standing admiration for the football played by Liverpool and Manchester City, who he says propelled the European game forward in the manner of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo during the peak years of Barcelona’s rivalry with Real Madrid.
