A moment of controversy at the end of an enthralling encounter resulted in a share of the spoils in Eamonn Deacy Park.

Patrick Hickey thought he had won the game for the home side with a header from a long-throw; however, referee Eoghan O’Shea spotted a foul and the delirious home celebrations were muted.

Dayle Rooney had driven home an early advantage for the visitors with a well-struck penalty after a Conor O’Keeffe transgression in the box four minutes in.

Adam McDonnell could have doubled the damage in the 15th minute, but his effort clipped the post. He would get an even better chance towards the end of the half but was off target after a clever run.

Danny Grant, who won the penalty, was rampant on the right and James Clarke revelled in the space in front of the Galway defence as Bohs bossed the first period.

United edged their way back and their best chance came when Maurice Nugent peeled off at the back post and shot a dangerous half-volley that was well saved by Kacper Chorazka.

The home team drew level shortly after the break after Ed McCarthy’s throw was eventually bundled over the line by Rob Slevin.

The goal buoyed the home side who were excellent thereafter. Garry Buckley was close, his towering header flashing just wide. McCarthy was even closer with a wonderful shot with his instep which was just wide.

Chorazka made a super save late on that proved enough for a point.
