There was late drama in Louth as Drogheda held nine-man Shelbourne to a 1-1 draw, while second-placed Derry City fell to a shock 2-1 defeat at Sligo Rovers.

Those two results were good news for Shamrock Rovers, who returned to winning ways against Dundalk with Johnny Kenny netting the winner.

Elsewhere, Waterford's fine run of form continued as Keith Long's men defeated St Patrick's Athletic 1-0 to remain third while Galway United and Bohemians played out a 1-1 draw out west.
