John Russell admits that his Sligo Rovers outfit need to “dig deep” to keep pace with the big-spending clubs who are funded by wealthy owners.

It’s been a remarkable week on and off the field for the Connacht club. In the space of a few days they had the emotional impact of the funeral of club stalwart Tommie Gorman, a morale-boosting win over league champions Shamrock Rovers, confirmation of a friendly against Everton later this month which will bring Séamus Coleman “home” to Sligo, contract extensions for two key players and, more relevant to their long-term future, a formal application for state funding to meet the estimated €17m cost of a rebuild of their Showgrounds home.
