Shelbourne defender Kameron Ledwidge has signed a new long-term deal with the club.

Currently in his fourth season with the Drumcondra outfit, the ex-Ireland Under-21 international has made 93 appearances so far for Shels and has featured heavily this term for Damien Duff's league leaders.

The 23-year-old arrived at Tolka from Southampton in July 2021, having first come up through St Kevin’s, and helped the Reds win promotion back to the top-flight later that year.

The Ballymun native has featured in 20 of their 22 Premier Division games so far this season, as Duff’s side sit top of the league with 14 games remaining, targeting a first league title since 2006.

“The third grumpiest person at the club, after myself and Joe (O’Brien). It is brilliant news that Kam has committed his future to Shels,” said Red manager Duff, who penned a new two-and-a-half year deal with the club on Thursday, as did his backroom staff.

“He has absolutely amazing attributes that any player would want. This year he has added a real maturity to his game and has put in some outstanding displays. It is a pleasure watching Kam grow as a player and more importantly as a person.”

“I’m delighted to be signing a new deal for this great club, I want to thank the manager and the coaching staff for trusting me to be part of the process going forward and also putting their trust in me to help get the club back where it belongs and winning trophies,” added Ledwidge.

“I can not wait for the second half of the season to get going and European football to start. It's a privilege to play in front of the best fans in the country every week and play for a club as big as Shelbourne.”

Duff’s side currently sit two points clear at the top of the league, and 12 ahead of third-placed Shamrock Rovers, while their Conference League qualifying campaign begins next month with a first round tie against Gibraltar’s St Joseph’s.

The first leg is set for Tolka Park on July 11, with the winners progressing to a second round meeting with Swiss side FC Zurich.

It will be the first time the club has competed in European football in 18 years, having clinched qualification with a fourth place league finish under Duff last season.
