The modern, bloated European Championships bears no relation to its origins as a four-team tournament and yet it has somehow ended up with a quartet that wouldn’t have looked out of place 40 years ago.

France v Spain. Netherlands v England. The first-named pair played out the ’84 final, while the Dutch claimed the honours in Germany four years later, the decade where the competition opened out from four to eight teams.
