Leinster senior coach Jacques Nienaber has confirmed that young out-half Sam Prendergast is in discussions with Connacht about a potential loan move next season.

But Nienaber stressed that a decision has not yet been made and that it would rest between the three key stakeholders - Prendergast, Leinster and the IRFU.

Connacht are hoping to land the talented 21-year-old who would link up with his older brother Cian.

Asked if there was an update on the situation, Nienaber said: “No. I think there are discussions, obviously, but like I said, my job is purely on the field. Leo (Cullen) and other guys are working on that.”

Pressed on whether the decision would ultimately be the player’s, Leinster’s or the IRFU’s, Nienaber responded: “I think it is probably, again it is not my domain, probably the best (person to ask) is Leo.

“But if I can just say, it will be the stakeholders...obviously Sam, it will be David (Humphreys, incoming IRFU performance director) and the national body (IRFU) and the club (Leinster).

“I don't think it won't be the club as well so I might as well say that.”

Prendergast, a Kildare native, has played 14 games for Leinster this season.
