Ireland co-captain Sam Monaghan is facing a long spell on the sidelines after suffering a "significant knee injury" during the recent Premiership final.

Monaghan (31) was stretchered off in the first half of her Gloucester-Hartpury side’s win over Bristol, with the club since confirming that the talismanic second-row is “set for an extended period on the sidelines after sustaining a significant knee injury”.

The devastating setback has cast doubt over Monaghan’s involvement in Ireland’s WXV1 campaign, which begins at the end of September in Canada.

The Meath native is a key part of the Ireland set-up, helping her country secure World Cup qualification on the back of their third-place Six Nations finish earlier this year, but head coach Scott Bemand may have to plan without Monaghan for the foreseeable future, as she begins a lengthy rehab programme.

“Losing Sam to injury is a big blow,” said Gloucester-Hartpury coach Sean Lynn.

“She played a huge role in our title-winning season and her absence will definitely be felt.

“We know how hard she will work with the medical team to get back to full fitness and we can’t wait to see her back in action.”
