The tragedies of the Dunlop dynasty and the rider closing in on his late uncle’s crown

Michael Dunlop goes into next weekend’s TT Races just one victory short of a record that has stood for 24 years. He is a rider who has refused to quit, even as the sport claimed the lives of his father, brother and uncle

There’s only one thing that can stop a motorbike road racer, Michael Dunlop once said. “And that’s the thing no one talks about.”

The death of his father Robert, his uncle Joey and his brother William on their bikes has not been enough to stop him. Next weekend, the 35-year-old from Ballymoney, Co Antrim, will line up at the starting grid in the Isle of Man TT Races hoping to match and surpass Joey’s record of 26 wins in the legendary road race.
