Ashbourne native Jenny Lehane has made a winning start at the Olympic boxing qualification tournament in Bangkok.

The primary school teacher beat Angelyris Lopez from Puerto Rico on a majority 4-1 decision in the bantamweight division to advance to the last 16. She will be back in action on Saturday.

At the European Games last year, Lehane was one win away from reaching the Paris Games in the 54kg class, but she was beaten in the first round of the first Olympic qualifier in Milan this spring on a split 3-2 decision.

In Wednesday’s action, super heavyweight Martin McDonagh from Tuam begins his campaign against Vietnam’s Doan Ngoc Minh Hieu in the morning session.

Twenty-four hours after chalking up a second win in Bangkok, Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Aidan Walsh faces a tough assignment against Yurii Zakharieiev from Ukraine in the 71kg class.

He secured a 4-1 over Algeria’s Youcef Islam Yaiche to secure a place in the last 16. He will be back in the ring on Wednesday.

Five boxers qualify from Walsh’s 71kg division which means he has two chances to secure a Paris slot.

He is guaranteed a place if he can win his quarter-final. But in the event of him losing at the last eight stage he will get a second opportunity in a box-off between the four beaten quarter-finalists though only the winner of this mini-tournament will go to Paris.

Gráinne Walsh is back in action in a last 16 contest against North Korean Hyo Sun Hwang, who had a bye in the first round.
