Ireland’s Gráinne Walsh is through to the last 16 in the welterweight division at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Bangkok.

She had a comfortable 5-0 win over North Korea’s Hyo Sun Hwang who had a bye in the first round.

She will be back in action on Friday against either Ivory Coast or Tajikistan opponents. The Tullamore native needs two more wins to secure a slot in Paris.

Meanwhile, her one time rival for the welterweight berth on the Irish team Amy Broadhurst stayed on target to qualify as a lightweight in the Paris Olympics for Team Great Britain.

She had a comfortable 5-0 win over Canada’s Terris Smith. One more win will secure her place at the Paris Olympic in a weight division in which Kellie Harrington will be defending her Tokyo Olympic title.

Tuam super heavyweight Martin McDonagh brushed aside the challenge of Vietnam’s Doan Minh Hieu Ngoc in his round of 32 bout.

The referee stopped the contest in Round 2 after giving the Vietnamese fighter three standing counts. McDonagh will be in action again on Saturday against either Bulgaria or Turkey.

Kelyn Cassidy (80kg) and Sean Mari (51kg) will be in action on Thursday.

Cassidy takes on a Spanish fighter in a last 16 contest while Marie meets a Malaysian flyweight in a last 32 contest.
