The newly-appointed Fianna Fáil deputy leader Jack Chambers has just been announced as the new Finance Minister. He will replace Michael McGrath, who will be taking up a role in the EU Commission.

At the age of 33, Chambers will become one of the youngest finance ministers in the state’s history.

The Dublin West TD was first elected to the Dáil in 2016 and has held several minister of state roles. He was previously a junior minister in the Department of Finance for just two weeks before being moved to Government Chief Whip, a role he held until 2022.

He also held the role of Minister of State for Sport and the Gaeltacht and in the Department of Defence.

Today on this extra episode of the Indo Daily, Tabitha Monahan is joined by Philip Ryan, Political Editor with the Irish Independent, to ask if Chambers’s appointment as Finance Minister is unexpected and, more importantly, is he up to the job in hand?
