The Real Health Podcast: How to protect and support your child’s mental health with Dr Beth Mosley

Dr Beth Mosley

Are you concerned about your child’s mental health? How do you set them on a path towards thriving? And what are the practical judgement-free tools for getting there?

In this episode of The Real Health Podcast I chat to consultant clinical psychologist, Dr Beth Mosley MBE, on her new book ‘Happy Families: How to Support Your Child’s Mental Health’.

Dr Mosley made the point that children are very observant to their parents, especially in emotional situations. The clinical psychologist says “A lot of adolescents say to me, I told my parents and they completely freaked out. Their face told me everything I need to know. They were angry with me and I talked to the parent and they're like, I wasn't, I was just really worried.”

Beth stressed the importance of connecting with the child and making sure they feel heard. She advised “wanting to connect to your young person so that they're in a place where they feel like they can find the words that match their feelings. Because for a lot of young people, that's really hard to articulate what's going on and at the right pace. So just giving your child or young person the space and encouragement is essential, for them being able to talk to you”.
