Real Health: Dr Eva Orsmond on the fight against obesity in Ireland

What is the best approach to tackling obesity? What is the best nutrition plan? And how did a Finnish obesity doctor end up in Ireland.

On this week’s Real Health episode, I speak to Dr Eva Orsmond MD, MPH, and Specialist in Obesity at Dr Eva’s Clinics.

Eva was born in Finland, she got married to a South African and moved there and had two small children there with her ex-husband before she came to Ireland. They then decided to move to Ireland which Eva admitted to me she didn’t know anything about Ireland, but her husband’s friend lived here, so they decided to make the move.

She told me that it wasn’t all plain sailing. She said “It was a quite hard landing (in Ireland) to go into the hospital straight away. I was at home with the kids for four and a half years before that and then I went straight to work in A& E when we got here. So, it was tough going.”

The obesity specialist explained to me that many people have a bad impression of her from the media she has done over the years and are surprised to find that she is lovely in person. “People often say to me when they come to my clinics ‘you are not the persona that you are on the TV,’ and I'm thinking, my God, that's terribly sad that there is that negative impression of me.”
