Real Health - Maura Rath on starting out as a yoga teacher

Can yoga be an antidote to our crazy lives? What are the benefits? And where did it all start for Yoga teacher Maura Rath?

On the Real Health podcast today, I am joined by yoga teacher, female entrepreneur, and recent contestant on The Apprentice UK, Maura Rath.

I started by asking Maura how she first got into yoga:

“I moved to New Zealand in 2011 and I started to run and I was feeling tight and there was a lot of talk about yoga in New Zealand at that time. So I said, you know what? I'll give it a go. I'll jump into a yoga class and then after the class my head would feel lighter, I'd feel more positive, and my energy was lifted,” she told me.

The Wexford native explained that she learned early on to always show up no matter how many people turned up to her class. “I never cancelled a class ever in my whole-time teaching, even if it was only one person showing up, I wanted to be there.”

The entrepreneur took part in this year’s Apprentice UK tv show, where she made it to Week 9 of the competition. Interestingly, Maura wasn’t allowed to do yoga while filming the show as this was seen as an unfair advantage. She said, “So, when I was in The Apprentice UK, it was filmed a while ago. Usually every morning I have at least an hour to myself, and I do my own 20 minute practice before I teach in the morning, and this was seen as an advantage, they said, in the show, so they weren't allowed to wake me up earlier because we have no phones, no clocks, or anything, And I suppose this really took its toll on me.”
