​Hilary Benn’s appointment as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in Britain’s new Labour government is an encouraging sign of the kind of administration Prime Minister Keir Starmer intends to lead for the next five years, and perhaps beyond.

Benn is a decent, well-read, thoughtful man who likes, respects and understands Ireland.
