As an arbiter of humour, The New Yorker ­magazine has a long-standing reputation. After all, Nora Ephron, David Sedaris and Dorothy Parker have routinely published there.

And yet the venerated magazine’s latest stab at a humorous read has garnered much attention for the wrong reasons.
