Politics is like the rumba, one trip and you’re in trouble, several false moves and you’ve stumbled out of the dance. As its years in power progressed, the Tory party began treating its premiers as if they were unsatisfactory rumba partners to be swapped out for dancers with better political rhythm.

Leaders could strike glitterball poses – Boris Johnson had swagger galore, and even Theresa May threw shapes to Abba’s Dancing Queen – but if their manoeuvring didn’t keep pace with the tempo, they were elbowed out.
