One take on France’s unique and quirky two-part voting system is that on day one, people vote with their hearts, choosing their favourite candidate, while on the second outing they vote with their heads, and try to pick a government. Tomorrow, French voters face into the second round, knowing that, whatever the outcome, a period of political turmoil is unavoidable, with huge consequences for the rest of the EU.
