One take on France’s unique and quirky two-part voting system is that on day one, people vote with their hearts, choosing their ­favourite candidate, while on the second outing they vote with their heads, and try to pick a government. Tomorrow, French voters face into the second round, knowing that, whatever the outcome, a period of political turmoil is unavoidable, with huge consequences for the rest of the EU.
