Micheál Martin, the Marathon Man of Irish politics, defies the odds once again to remain on top

During his time as Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin has seen off 12 rival party leaders: Top row, left to right, Eamon Gilmore, Joan Burton, Brendan Howlin, Alan Kelly, Enda Kenny and Leo Varadkar. Middle row, Stephen Donnelly, Catherine Murphy, John Gormley and Eamon Ryan. Bottom row, Róisín Shortall and Gerry Adams

The latest thing they’re saying in Fianna Fáil is that Micheál Martin’s initials also stand for “Marathon Man”. He just keeps on trucking as others fall by the wayside, an emblem of continuity – and therefore stability – in a world gone mad.

Fianna Fáilers are cock-a-hoop at their recent election successes, no less than Fine Gaelers.
