What is the Injuries Resolution Board?

The Injuries Resolution Board (IRB), formerly known as the Personal Injuries Assessment Board or PIAB, is an independent statutory body responsible for handling personal injury claims. Its main mission is to offer a clear, fair and efficient way to settle personal injury claims without going to court.

Whether it’s a workplace incident, a road collision or a public liability issue, the IRB can evaluate your claim. Its goals are to simplify the process, cut down on legal fees and ensure a speedy resolution.

How do I submit a claim?

You can fill out a claim application form at injuries.ie or you can send your claim form by post to: Injuries Resolution Board, PO Box 8, Clonakilty, Co. Cork, P85 YH98.

How long does it take to process?

The IRB typically assesses claims within just nine months, starting from when they get consent from the person or organisation the claim is against (known as the respondent). That is in stark contrast to the litigation or court process, which can drag on for more than four years.

Can I settle my vehicle damage claim with the respondent and still pursue my personal injury claim?

You can settle your vehicle damage and any other agreed special damages with the respondent at any time. This won’t affect your personal injury claim.

What is mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary, confidential process where those involved can discuss and explore the issues. It is fast with resolution likely in less than three months. Your legal rights are unaffected if no agreement is reached.

If I was involved in a motor collision with an uninsured driver who left the scene can I still make a claim?

You can make a claim, but you need to contact the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland first. They can give you the insurance status of any vehicle, which will help you get your claim ready for the injuries board.

Top tip: You must submit the following: a completed application form; a processing fee of €45 if your claim is submitted online or €90 if submitted by email or post; and a completed medical report from your doctor.
