Whatever your budget, there’s something of interest to be found in SuperValu’s annual French and German Wine Sale, which runs until September 20. As always, the supermarket’s wine buyer Kevin O’Callaghan sees it as a chance to tempt wine drinkers out of their habitual purchases to try something new.

Take its range of Sauvignon Blanc. For bargain hunters willing to splash a little cash, one interesting guest wine from La Perrière l’Origin offers Sancerre, but not quite as you know it, with partial oak fermentation and ageing. For half its price, at €10, our wine of the week is a Sauvignon from Burgundy that sits somewhere between a typical Loire Sauvignon and a more expressive New Zealand style. Back in the Loire, La Perrière l’Origin Coteaux du Giennois AOC (€12) is crisp and zesty with aromas of lime leaf, crunchy apple and a touch of smoke — a great choice for an aperitif or with simple fish dishes.
