Aoife Carrigy

If you’re looking for a rich and spicy treat of a red wine to gift someone special this Father’s Day, Australian Shiraz is an excellent bet, with something for every pocket and palate.

Shiraz was one of the earliest varieties to be planted in South Eastern Australia from the 1830s, when cuttings were brought from Europe. It was often labelled Hermitage in honour of Syrah’s spiritual home in the Rhône. Shiraz thrived in the warm, dry conditions and later survived the fashion for fortified wine that saw other vines replaced. By the late 20th century, it was Australia’s most planted wine grape, a position maintained today.
