Eugene Davis, who has died aged 70 after a short illness, is remembered by sports fans as a legend of League of Ireland football. But for those who knew him personally, like his former classmate Pat Devlin, he was someone “who was genuine, very humble, the loveliest and funniest fellow you would ever meet”.

From their years in Dún Laoghaire CBS and playing for St Joseph’s, Sallynoggin, from under-12s to youths, Devlin had no doubts: “From the first day I met him, he was the nicest person I ever met. We were always friends.”
