The sound of soft, puppy-like whimpers, coming from Tiger the dog, started just as Charlie Bird’s wife Claire took to the stage.

The memorial service commemorating the veteran journalist’s life was coming to an end and as Claire began to speak about “Bird”, as she called him, her voice cracked under the weight of grief.
