Irish vegetable growers are under mounting pressure from rising input costs and fluctuating output prices in the larger retail multiples, but small organic farms can be commercially successful as well as environmentally sustainable.

Gorse Farm in Bunclody, on the Carlow/Wexford border, cultivates barely half an acre but it is thriving thanks to its focus on “quality and freshness”.
