The sight of Keir and Victoria Starmer shaking hands and greeting their supporters as they made their way along Downing St to the door of No 10 brought to mind a similar scene from 27 years ago.

On that day in May 1997 Tony and Cherie Blair walked the same street shaking hands and hugging well-wishers before they made their way through the big black door on the crest of a wave of hope that generated a landslide election victory.
