Jim O’Brien: Why do we drive ourselves mad trying to impose order on nature in our gardens?

Mankind has been obsessively gardening for around 23,000 years – but would we not be better off just relaxing and letting it all grow wild like some of us did during No Mow May?

‘Despite the enormity of the task, I’m itching to get at it. I have identified all the targets for my initial attack and can’t wait to crank up the lawnmower, unsheathe the hedge trimmer and sharpen the hedge clippers’. Photo: Getty

I went wild for No Mow May this year. I let nature take over and allowed the lawn look after itself, ignoring the weeds in the yard, even though some of them have grown as tall as a small pony, and turned a blind eye to the briars sticking up like beanstalks over the hedges.

I didn’t even get a haircut in the last month, with the result that I’m now faced with the daunting task of tidying up the wilderness.
