Jim O’Brien: We’ve created monsters of consumption full of despair, wonder and hope

Visiting a city like Toronto can be an overwhelming experience, as our impact on the world is laid bare

We returned to the Emerald Isle on Friday morning after our sojourn on the North American continent, where we spent most of our time in Toronto, the largest city in Canada. It was a real contrast to be back home.

After spending over a week in a world of crowded subways, elevators, escalators and skyscrapers, I took to the bed to tackle the jetlag and woke to the sound a lowing cow, anxious for a close encounter with a bull, and the spluttering of a lone tractor negotiating the hill outside our gate.
