Darragh McCullough: It pains me to kill thousands of fodder plants – but if I want my maze, there’s no way out of it

Here’s hoping enough customers will be happy to hand over fivers in return for the opportunity to get lost in the field beside my farm shop

While fears over fodder supplies are growing around the country, I spent most of my spare time last week murdering thousands of maize plants that were just getting going.

We’ve spent a month feeding all the extra round-bale silage to make up for the lack of grass in front of the cows. There might be a bounce in growth around the corner if temperatures stay up, and an occasional downpour graces the east coast, but you wouldn’t want to bank on it.
