Game of Thrones super-fans with a king’s ransom in their bank account could live out their Westeros dream after a Co Armagh castle featured in the TV show was put on the market.

Gosford Castle in Markethill shot to international fame after it was used as a filming location for the HBO fantasy drama, doubling as Riverrun, the home of House Tully.

“It’s something very unique,” said Art O’Hagan, managing director of CPS Property.

“It’s very rare. We have been in business for 38 years, and I can say this is definitely a rare find.”

Gosford Castle was previously listed in 2019. It has been divided into a number of properties, with the Bastian Gate division of the original castle the property currently for sale at £625,000.

“We in CPS Property are delighted to be the selected listing agent to bring such a beautiful unique property to the open market,” Mr O’Hagan said.

“We have been involved in lots of sales within this beautiful castle nestled among 600 acres of forest.”

Despite the castle being instantly recognisable to many Game of Thrones fans, Mr O’Hagan doesn’t believe it will be sold to one.

“Unfortunately not. [Potential buyers] seem to be people who are from mid-Ulster but have moved away and are looking for somewhere when they are staying at home,” he said.

Mr O’Hagan said the property, which was constructed between 1819 and 1825 for Archibald Acheson, the 2nd Earl of Gosford, who was a prominent figure in British and Irish politics, was well known to locals.

It was designed by the architect Thomas Hopper, who was known for his Gothic Revival style, which was popular during the 19th century, and characterised by battlements, turrets and large windows.

During the Second World War, the castle was requisitioned by the military and used to house soldiers.

Though the sale has only been listed for a matter of days, Mr O’Hagan said he had already received a number of enquiries.

“The well-proportioned Bastian Gate offers an outstanding home in a beautiful, idyllic setting,” he added.

“The internal, modern lift to all three floors opens up the range of buyers to all markets.”

The property lies within the walls of the prestigious Gosford Castle and is located in the grounds of Gosford Forest Park.

The park features a herd of red deer, an arboretum, a walled garden, two mill ponds, five children’s play parks, many walking and cycle paths and a host of flora and fauna.

The home is spread across three floors, with a bathroom on each floor.

It also has two kitchens, two bedrooms, a main foyer, a reception room, a lounge area and an entertainment area.

“It is a freehold property and is suitable for lending purposes, if finance is required,” Mr O’Hagan continued.

“The gated community creates privacy and adequate security to the new, fortunate owner.”
