Meryl Streep has hinted at her potential return to the Mamma Mia! film franchise.

The Oscar-winning actress (74) mentioned that she is set to meet with producer Judy Craymer “imminently”, during which they will discuss the possible reintroduction of her character, Donna Sheridan, in Mamma Mia! 3.

In the film’s 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, fans discovered after a brief cameo by Streep that Donna had died.

“I don’t know how they’re going to do it. They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but it’s in [my diary] and I’m going to hear about it pretty soon,” the three-time Oscar winner said.

“Of course I want to do it. I think folks love it.”

The Hollywood star’s agent also mentioned film studio Universal’s eagerness to produce a third instalment of the series.

Last October, Ms Craymer, producer of the musical and films, said that a third film would happen but claimed Abba’s Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson would need convincing.

“I’m sure [the third movie] will happen. I’m in the privileged position that I have Universal Studios wanting to do it, who I love working with, and I have a storyline,” she told Variety.

“It just always takes a certain amount of time with Mamma Mia.

“Bjorn and Benny always take a certain amount of convincing. I don’t know how much more convincing they’re going to have because everybody wants another film.

“But they had Abba Voyage and then they wanted a rest from Abba stuff.

“But it will happen. We’ve done the television show and now maybe I’ll focus on the movie.

“Maybe that’ll be a second 25-year celebration.”

Then in February, the film producer said she was confident that she could easily persuade cast members such as Amanda Seyfried and Julie Walters to come back for a third film, especially considering the success of the previous two instalments released in 2008 and 2018.

“The cast had a great time making the first two films. Julie said she is going to retire from acting, but the one thing she would still do is another Mamma Mia! film,” she said.

“I really think there’s big love from the people who worked on the films and also from the audiences. All the generations enjoy it.”

Streep’s comments came after the Hollywood star was honoured with an honorary Palme d’Or at an emotional presentation on Tuesday night during the Cannes Film Festival’s opening ceremony the Grand Theatre Lumiere.
