England fans appear to be worried about Anthony Gordon after a picture emerged that showed him standing alone on the outside of a team huddle during the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 victory over Switzerland on Saturday.

The 23-year-old was included in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the tournament following a sensational season for Newcastle.

But he has featured for just a handful of minutes in Germany, with his sole appearance coming as a 90th-minute substitute during England’s third group game against Slovenia.

After remaining on the bench for the group clashes against Serbia and Denmark, Gordon failed to make it off the bench during the knockout victories over Slovakia and Switzerland. And his hurt appeared to be obvious for all to see as the Three Lions prepared for penalties on Saturday.

With the England stars huddled together in a show of unity, cameras captured Gordon standing well out of the way and looking subdued with his head down.

Newcastle fan page Magpie Media posted two images of Gordon to X and wrote: “It is so disappointing to see Anthony Gordon being consistently ignored by the manager. It looks like it’s starting to affect him too, which is really sad to see.”

Supporter @bald_eagle4713 replied to the post by writing: “It’s bordering on criminal how Gordon has been overlooked.” And even Sunderland fan @dpentl_ added: “I’ve been desperate for him to be on the pitch.”

England have been criticised throughout Euro 2024, especially during the early stages of the tournament.

And Gordon appeared to break rank when assessing the Three Lions’ performance in the wake of their bore draw with Slovenia a fortnight ago as he admitted “it’s just not clicking”.

The winger explained: “I think our aim was to make a statement and sort of correct the performance we've had in the past two games. I still think we're in that place. I think we've still got to do better.

“I just think we can do so much better. That's the problem. We've got such good players. In training, we're so good every day. We do everything right. And then it's just not clicking. Hopefully in the coming games it will [click] because we need to start really attacking teams and dominating games.

“I don't think it's nerves. I mean, we've all played on big stages for a while. So I don't think nerves is the best thing to put it down to. I just think as football is like that sometimes.”

Gordon will be hoping to get his big chance on Wednesday night when England take on the Netherlands in the semi-finals. Victory in that match would see England going up against either France or Spain in the final.
