Lazio owner Claudio Lotito has aimed a bitter dig at Mason Greenwood as he closes in on a permanent move away from Manchester United. Greenwood is widely expected to leave Old Trafford this summer, with a host of clubs said to be interested in snapping him up.

The former England winger spent last season on loan at Getafe and has entered the final year of his United contract, which expires in the summer of 2025. The Spanish club were reportedly interested in a permanent move for Greenwood earlier this summer but the financial side of things made a deal unworkable.

A handful of other clubs, including Lazio, Inter Milan and Juventus. have also been linked with the 22-year-old but it seems he has opted to go elsewhere. A move to Marseille is close to being rubber-stamped, according to ESPN, with United ready to sanction a loan with a view to a permanent switch.

Marseille are said to have launched a 'firm offer' with talks between the French giants and United advancing at a rapid rate. It means Lazio will be forced to shelve their interest in Greenwood, something which Lotito appears to be slightly frustrated about.

Discussing his side's pursuit of Greenwood, the Lazio owner revealed that a deal was in the works last year but fell through at the last second. He went on to explain that another target, who he believes would be a much better fit than Greenwood, has already been identified.

"The deal to sign Mason Greenwood was close last year but then it collapsed at the final stages," said Lotito, per Fabrizio Romano. "Now I have one more name on the list. I can’t share the name but he’s 10 times better than Greenwood."

Greenwood has not played for United since being suspended by the club in 2022 after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He was subsequently charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Those charges were dropped in February last year but it was decided by United that it would be best for Greenwood to revive his career elsewhere. He went on to spend the campaign on loan at Getafe, scoring 10 goals and registering six assists from 36 appearances in all competitions.
