Man Utd staff 'left in the dark' as Erik ten Hag fallout sparks early pre-season turmoil

Man Utd staff have been left in pre-season turmoil at Carrington due to an unresolved Erik ten Hag row.

Manchester United players will start to report back to Carrington for the start of pre-season this morning, but there is reportedly still uncertainty surrounding Jadon Sancho's status. Erik ten Hag's public spat with the 24-year-old winger last season doesn't look to have yet been resolved, leaving much of United's staff in the dark.

The Red Devils are expected to welcome players who haven't been in action at Euro 2024 or the Copa America back to the club's training complex today.

Sancho should be one of them after his successful loan spell at Borussia Dortmund in the second half of last season, but his circumstances are complicated.

Ten Hag banished Sancho from first-team training last September after the latter accused him of lying and scapegoating by excluding him from a trip to Arsenal due to training performances.

The United No. 25 refused to apologise for his actions - reportedly because he didn't want it to be viewed as an admission of guilt - and endured a four-month exile before returning to Dortmund.

Sancho helped his former club reach the Champions League final, registering three goals and three assists in 21 appearances.

While he's expected to leave United permanently this summer, he's due back at Carrington along with his non-international team-mates for the start of pre-season.

But, according to The Sun, club staff have no idea whether Sancho will be reintegrated with Ten Hag's main group of players, having been given no information.

It's claimed that they are usually handed a breakdown of aspects like return dates, confirming which players will be training on the pitch and when, and testing schedules in the first week of pre-season.

However, they have received no indication of Sancho's status while United work to shift his £300,000-a-week salary off the books.

A £45m asking price has reportedly been slapped above his head, almost a £30m loss on the £73m paid for his signature in 2021.

That fee is thought to have priced Dortmund out of turning his loan return into another permanent deal, though, and there has been little other interest.

Ten Hag could attempt to host clear-the-air talks with Sancho as early as today with the view of finding a compromise to resolve their spat.

But United may also consider it best for all parties if he continues to work away from the first-team squad if he is almost certain to leave this summer, even on another loan.

Mason Greenwood, another forward widely expected to depart, isn't likely to be called back to Carrington.
