Manchester United want to include a clause in Mason Greenwood's contract that could block a transfer this summer, according to reports. The Red Devils are already struggling to find a suitor willing to meet their financial demands as they attempt to offload Greenwood on a permanent basis.

However, the structure of their desired deal could also cause a significant hurdle that could ultimately lead to the 22-year-old staying put.

United would reportedly prefer to sell Greenwood this summer but are under little pressure to accept a cut-price deal for a player they have developed since he was six.

He is said to have attracted significant interest with his performances on loan at Getafe last season, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists in 36 appearances for the La Liga club.

AS Monaco, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Lazio, Marseille, Napoli and Valencia have all been credited with an interest.

But with pre-season getting underway at Carrington this morning, Greenwood's future is still in limbo, and he is expected to continue his exile from Erik ten Hag's first-team squad.

United are reportedly digging their heels in over their former No. 11's fee, setting his asking price at around £40million to represent his current quality and potential.

Lazio and Valencia are the only two clubs claimed to have submitted offers so far, but neither were close to United's demands.

And, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Old Trafford giants also want to include a very big sell-on clause in any deal for Greenwood.

That would allow the club to profit from the first future sale of Greenwood, should he meet the potential he displayed before his January 2022 arrest.

He was later charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour, all of which he denied.

In February 2023, the UK's Crown Prosecution Service dropped all the charges, citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and new information that had come to light.

Following a six-month internal investigation, United and Greenwood mutually decided his career was best served resuming away from Old Trafford.

And there is reportedly a desire between all parties to make that a permanent arrangement this summer, with United moving on under INEOS' stewardship.

But the Red Devils are holding firm on their terms for Greenwood's exit, and will likely trigger the 12-month extension in his contract until 2026 if no transfer is agreed.

In that case, another loan rather than a controversial stay would be likely, potentially with an obligation to buy next summer.
