BBC staff have reportedly been left out of pocket at Euro 2024 due to an issue with the broadcaster’s expenses system. It is claimed that individuals working for the corporation in Germany have now gone 11 days without recompense.

Not all BBC employees earn the big salaries of their top on-screen talent. Lower-paid production staff also play a vital role in ensuring a smooth broadcast.

But according to the Daily Mail, some staff have been left around £600 out of pocket after being affected by an issue with the expenses system. It is reported that the issue has lasted for nearly two weeks.

BBC policy states that staff can claim for all necessary expenditure reasonably incurred in the performance of their duties. That will likely include the expensive travel costs of navigating around host nation Germany to cover matches.

Earlier in the tournament, England captain Harry Kane hit back at criticism from the likes of BBC presenter Gary Lineker and pundit Alan Shearer. Both former England captains slammed the Three Lions’ early performances at the tournament.

“I would never want to be disrespectful to any player, especially a player who has worn the shirt and knows what it is like to play for England," Kane said.

"But what ex-players now have got to realise is it is very hard not to listen to it now, especially for some players who are not used to it or some players who are new to the environment.”

The striker continued: "I know they have got to be honest and give their opinion, but also they have a responsibility of being an ex-England player that a lot of players look up to and people do listen to them and people do care what they say.

"The bottom line is we haven't won anything as a nation for a long, long time and a lot of these players were part of that as well and they know how tough it is. So it is not digging anyone out, it is just the reality that they do know it is tough to play in these major tournaments and tough to play for England.

"Being as helpful as they can and building the lads up with confidence would be a much better way of going about it.”

England are through to the semi-finals at Euro 2024. They face the Netherlands on Wednesday, with a place in the final against either Spain or France at stake.
