Rio Ferdinand has demanded talks with Ivan Toney over his penalty technique after the England striker kept his cool to score from 12 yards in his side’s penalty shootout against Switzerland at Euro 2024. The Three Lions scored all five of their spot kicks to book their place in the semi-finals.

Toney stepped up for England’s fourth penalty after Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka had all netted in the shootout.

The Brentford man walked up to the ball and dispatched his kick while he kept his eyes firmly on the goal.

Ferdinand watched the strike back alongside Gary Lineker, Frank Lampard and Micah Richards in the BBC studio as the four ex-England players analysed the match and gave their take on the penalties.

Lineker exclaimed: “Ivan Toney, how can he not look at the ball, one step as well?"

And Ferdinand replied: “That is mad. I need to chat to him about that, that’s mad.”

Toney came on to replace captain Harry Kane with 11 minutes of extra time remaining after England had come from behind to finish level after 90 minutes. Breel Embolo opened the scoring for Switzerland 75 minutes into the encounter, before Bukayo Saka levelled with a wonder strike from the edge of the area five minutes later.

Toney played a crucial part in the victory with his spot kick as Trent Alexander-Arnold held his nerve to convert the final penalty. The Liverpool player then ran over to his team-mates to celebrate the result. And England will face a semi-final showdown against either the Netherlands or Turkey.

England’s victory saw them win a penalty shootout at a major tournament for just the third time in 10 attempts. And after the match, captain Harry Kane told fans: “Another tough game and first of all great resilience from the lads to turn it up again. To get the goal, a fantastic finish from Bukayo Saka.

“Penalties are penalties, but I felt prepared - I was on the side, but I felt comfortable in the lads. Five out of five and a save from Picks (Jordan Pickford).

“We trust in whoever is on the pitch and the difference this year compared to past years is we have proven penalty takers – we have a lot more experience and we showed it out there.”

England’s semi-final will be played on Wednesday at 8pm. And if Gareth Southgate’s side win that contest, they will face either France or Spain in the showpiece event next Sunday.
