The Night Caller is set to come to an end as the third gripping episode of the Liverpool-based drama aired on Channel 5. But as the penultimate show was broadcast, fans at home begged for it to "speed up" as they criticised it for being "stretched out".

The contemporary thriller is a "claustrophobic tale about the power of influence and those with the loudest voice have over the most vulnerable people,". The series follows taxi driver Tony and his "unhealthy obsession" with a late-night radio talk show host called Lawrence.

Cab driver Tony is played by Hustle, Spooks, and Sherwood star Robert Glenister, while Sean Pertwee, known for You and Gotham, takes on the role of Lawrence.

In tonight's episode, the net was closing in on Tony and he was advised to leave town. But shortly after, the taxi driver was stunned when Lawrence hailed his cab and he was in shock to finally get to meet his hero.

However, it turned into a trip with dramatic and regrettable repercussions. The Channel 5 show is set to come to a final conclusion tomorrow, but impatient fans have complained that it's taking too long.

Fans were less than impressed and wanted the full story to be revealed quicker. One Twitter user penned: "#nightcaller another 1 hour drama padded out and stretched to 4 nights - ridiculous. Some of the greatest movies ever were only 90 minutes long."

Another added: "#thenightcaller Finding this so slow and boring but need to see how it ends now." While a third said: "Seems a bit slow so far. Will hold on though #TheNightcaller."

Someone else wrote: "Although it’s quite good they could have done this in half the time! Speed up for goodness sake! #nightcaller."

However, others didn't mind the build up of suspense and tension. One user shared that they were "baffled" by the complaints as they wrote: "What an incredibly unravelling on Night Caller.

"Absolutely brilliant acting by Robert Glennister. Baffled as to complaints about being slow, it’s called storytelling and perfectly done to create the ending of this episode #Nightcaller."

Another added: "A slow burner but its starting to ramp up. Enjoying this #thenightcaller." Someone else posted: "I don't get all the hate for #TheNightCaller - and I usually bail on dramas/thrillers if it doesnt grip me from the off. This is one guy's slow descent into madness.... sticking with it."

The Night Caller continues tomorrow night on Channel 5 at 9pm
