Pierce Brosnan made a rare public outing with his mother Mary following an evening at swanky private members' club Oswald's in London on Saturday night.

The Irish actor, 71, left the venue holding hands with his mother, 90, while flashing a Hollywood smile to cameras as they made their way home.

Pierce was sporting a smart black suit and shirt for the occasion, which he teamed with a pair of orange-tinted glasses.

Meanwhile, Mary wore black trousers and a black jacket with a black and white striped jumper and a black cross-body bag.

The retired nurse supported herself with a walking stick and she accessorised with a lovely pearl and silver necklace.

Pierce is the only son of Mary and carpenter Thomas Brosnan, whom Pierce previously said he has only met once.

Of his upbringing, Pierce told Cigara Ficionado in 1997: 'I grew up in a very small town in southern Ireland. I never knew my father. He left when I was an infant and I was left in the care of my mother and my grandparents.'

Mary worked in England to provide for the family and Pierce recalled: 'My mother came home once a year, twice a year. Consequently, there was a certain amount of early loss in that young boy's life.'

However, he described his mother as 'very courageous', making clear that he harboured no resentment.

After his grandparents died, Pierce went to live with relatives and then a 'big, warm momma' named Eileen in a boarding house.

Pierce has four children of his own; Christopher, 51, Sean, 40, Dylan, 27, and Paris, 23 - and has been married to American journalist Keely Shaye Smith for 23 years.

His first daughter Charlotte died from ovarian cancer and her mother, Australian actress Cassandra Harris, widowed Pierce with the same disease.

Career wise, Pierce most recently appeared in television film The Great Lillian Hall, loosely inspired by American stage actress Marian Selde.

He starred alongside Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Grey's Anatomy's Jesse Williams.
