Spain were crowned winners of Euro 2024 on Sunday night after their 2-1 victory in the final broke England hearts in Berlin. Luis de la Fuente's side won all seven of their matches at the tournament as Spain became European champions for a record fourth time. Midfield general Rodri and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal were among the Spanish stars to shine on their route to glory.

For all the personal accolades he earned, 2023-24 was yet another bleak season for Harry Kane.  The England captain's decade-long search for silverware continued for both club and country as Bayern Munich had their first trophyless season since 2011-12 and England were beaten 2-1 in the final of Euro 2024 by Spain. The £86million striker tallied a remarkable 44 goals in all competitions in his first season at Bayern but failed to win a trophy, the main reason he moved to Germany. And although Kane shared the golden boot at Euro 2024, his Three Lions team were made to wait two more years for another shot at international silverware.

Gary Lineker and Micah Richards have both slammed reports that their criticisms during the European Championship had any influence on Gareth Southgate's decision to depart as England manager.  The BBC presenter and pundit had been among a number of critics of England's performances in the early stages of the competition, which were widely regarded as being below par.  They were far from the only voices to level criticism at the Three Lions' showings, although Lineker's description of their performance in the group stages as being 's***' caught headlines.

The Real Madrid and England star has enjoyed a frankly absurd rise in the game over the last 12 months, with him firmly establishing himself as one of the most recognisable names in the sport. His ascent began with a £113million transfer to the Bernabeu last summer. His club campaign culminated with the LaLiga title and a Champions League winners' medal at Wembley.

CHRIS SUTTON: As much as I wanted England to win these Euros, and as excruciating as it was to see us lose on Sunday evening, in a way it was good for football that Spain were crowned champions. Luis de la Fuente's side were totally in sync. Symmetrical. Smooth. Everything England weren't, really. For the Spaniards, it seemed effortless in how they progressed play from back to front. For us, it looked like a chore, and we spent most of our time in Germany banking on a big moment arriving to make up for our lack of balance.

CRAIG HOPE: Gareth Southgate is a brilliant man. A brilliant manager he is not. Not through the lens of the technical and tactical skills that usher teams to major trophies. In that regard, he has come up short. Take England 's torturous progress in Germany. As one source close to the squad said: 'There were 100 different ways for that group to make the final with that draw. They did it in pretty much the hardest way possible.'

Gary Lineker has declared that Gareth Southgate brought 'pride, respect and togetherness to England' after it was confirmed the Three Lions boss stepped down as manager of England. The news was confirmed on Tuesday, two days after Southgate and his side came up short in their bid to win Euro 2024 and their first major title in 58 years. 'It's time for change, and for a new chapter,' Southgate wrote in an emotional statement shared by England, as he thanked the likes of Steve Holland, his players and England fans for their support.
